Google Announces Gemini Feature That ChatGPT Has Had for Eight Months
The capability, which Google described as 'a significant leap forward in multimodal reasoning,' was available in GPT-4o since last August.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Google held a press event Tuesday to announce a new capability in its Gemini AI assistant that allows users to upload images and ask questions about them, which the company called “a breakthrough in how humans and AI can interact with the visual world.”
ChatGPT has had this feature since August.
“We’re incredibly proud of what our teams have built,” said a Google executive who had clearly been briefed to avoid mentioning competitors. “This changes everything.”
The announcement was accompanied by a live demo in which Gemini successfully identified a picture of a dog, which the presenter described as “just the beginning.”
Reporters in the audience who attempted to ask about the timeline were redirected to a slide showing a graph with an upward-sloping line and no labeled axes.
“We’re building for the long term,” said the executive.
At press time, Meta had announced an identical feature and described it as “genuinely new.”
